One other potential source of information about Appian’s life and career may be supplied by a sarcophagus in Rome, which, according to the verse inscription on it, a certain Appianos prepared for himself and his wife, Eutychia, while they were both still alive.
Given the rarity of the name Appianos in Rome, the learned nature of the verses, and the suitability of a wife named Eutychia for someone who attributed great importance to Rome’s good fortune (eutychia), a case can be made that the Appianos in question is our historian.3 If so, we have the additional information that Appian held a priesthood of Tyche at Rome to which he was appointed by the emperor, that he married Eutychia when she was twelve years old, and that Eutychia died when she was f
